Gene Robinson, the Gay Bishop

GQ magazine just did an article on gene Robinson and his life as the Episcopal church's first gay Bishop. Recently he got married to his partner.

I have to say that I do admire the man. I am not really much on gay activism- I think that you encourage change by being honest about yourself and simply living your life without needing/wanting permission from your peers. When people recognize that gay people are just like straight people. I admire this man because he is not an activist. He didn't join the clergy in an attempt to make a statement and confront people into a forced change. Instead, the man dedicated himself to God and to serving the people of his congregation. He was thankful for who he was and confident in what his life was about. That is the reason that he rose to be a Bishop. The fact that he was a "Gay Bishop" was not the reason people wanted him in the role. His congregation wanted him there because they felt he best exemplified a Christian leader.

I joined the Episcopal church a few years ago after a lifetime of being a Catholic. I didn't join it because of the "Gay Bishop" but I certainly felt that being a gay person didn't matter and that all who wished to be part of the church were welcome and respected. It is a shame that some traditionalists within the assembly are getting all "right wing" about the developments regarding gays in the church. It starts to remind me of the worst of Catholic policy. I do believe though that the Episcopal Church will weather the storm of the dissension without too much fall out. Let's hope.

Anyway - take a look at the article here. It was a very good portrait of the man.
